It is not a serious problem but if it is prolonged then you have to do something about it. Sleepless nights can give you many diseases and keep the entire day unproductive. A good night’s sleep can keep all this away. Check out some holistic approaches to treating insomnia that are easy to adapt.

For me what is insomnia and its terrible gifts?

I went through a lot in my personal life which gave me sleepless nights. Sudden changes in my life gave me a scary roller coaster ride. My sleep was affected. I was always stressed. Always thinking of problems and the future. It created a lot of anxiety. My sleep quality started decreasing. Insomnia for me was no less than living in hell. I go to bed at 10:30 pm and fall asleep by 12:30 am then woke at 2:30 am then wasn’t able to sleep. I was sleeping for two hours at night and then it became worse for the continuous month. I was not sleeping at all.

Without sleep, my entire day was not at all in discipline. I have a headache, back pain, shoulder pain, shortness of breath, hallucinations, etc. Eyes out!! A cherry on top of the cake moment was around the corner. With anxiety and stress, I was getting digestive issues. The anxiety created by the stomach can keep your brain awake at night.

Sometimes I slept for two hours other times no sleep. It was difficult for me to fall asleep. After going through a bumpy ride for continuous three months I started with some self-care practices for better sleep. I am sharing some DIY insomnia remedies with you that I have tried.

Home Remedies for Insomnia that benefitted me

Body Massage: With the body massage I get my stress release in no time. All who are going through stress and anxiety must try this remedy. Just grab a bottle of any massage oil that suits your skin and massage yourself in the privacy of your own home. Home remedies for insomnia are all there for you to give some self-care. I give myself a good foot massage in the evening. I also put my feet in a warm water tub and put lotion on it before bed. Putting my feet in warm water gives me an excellent feeling and calms my mind. I place my warm water tub near my bed so that I don’t have to do much before I go to sleep.

Comfortable bedroom and laughter: Home sweet home should be a temple for you. Treat yourself as God or Goddess. Clean your place small or big. Make your bedroom the best place for you to relax in this entire world. You are going through the toughest time of your life. Make your home the powerhouse of your life. Charge yourself with the best energy from your rest area.

Some things that you require for better sleep are a comfortable mattress, pillows, slow instrumental music, or any music that calms your mind just before sleep, noiseless, no light, and an organized clean room.

If your brain is stressing a lot about future or past events and you are not able to sleep then express what you feel in a diary. The best that worked for me was I see any comedy movie or show before two hours of sleep and laugh a lot. Laughter is the best medicine. This will make you sleep like a happy toddler.

Exercise and Yoga: Exercise and Yoga daily can lower your stress and give you better sleep. People who do physical exercise and stay active in the morning get baby sleep at night. Doing various Yoga poses every day will put your body and mind in a blissful state. If you could manage some time for yourself then this is the best sleep-promoting technique at home.

Walking and Drinking Water: I used to check on my steps with an APP. You may have any health app on your phone that can remind you to drink water and count your steps. Drinking 3-4 lit. of water and walking fast 10000 steps in a day is your target. Many health apps take care of your sleep quality, steps, running time, pulse rate, etc. Get anyone on your phone and start living your life in discipline. Start slowly don’t stress yourself too much. Drinking water controls your anxiety level and helps you calm down to get better sleep. Walking fast or simply walking with headphone music can reduce your stress level and make you feel better.  I was adapting these lifestyle changes for better sleep. Some health apps are free. Doing it with the APP encourages me to achieve my target.

Get some sunlight and deep breathing: Home remedies for insomnia will only work if you are feeling happy from within. Happiness or calming the mind to sleep all are done by different hormones in the body. Melatonin hormone helps with inducing sleep. Sunshine may play a role in regulating hormones and sleep patterns.  Get some sunlight, walking in sunlight with deep breathing can make you happy and feel positive for your life. Just make it a habit to see changes.

Reading books: It is an excellent bedtime ritual for insomnia relief that I follow every night. Reading books can make your mind focus on the present and forget all your worries. It is better to choose some books that can calm your mind and not make you scared or anxious. I love to read fantasy stories or science fiction before sleep. This habit will make you leave late at night scrolling on social media.

Dancing: If you are like me and love to dance then trust me this is the best home-based sleep therapy for you. Dancing will make you happy, do the exercise of the day, set you in a better mood, etc. This will make you tired and forget all worries to sleep better at night.

Expressing stress: If you are going through some stressful situation in life or recently went through some trauma. Express all of it to people who love you and care for you. You may simply write it on a notepad. Start thinking of solutions instead of problems. Try to become more logical than emotional. Get rid of all unwanted emotions that are not allowing you to sleep well. This is the first self-care practice for better sleep.

Tea: I tried chamomile tea just one hour before bed. This relaxes your body to get better sleep. You may try this home remedy for insomnia only if you have no problem with the tea. Healthy herbal teas are there in the market that you may try depending on your stomach’s liking. Tea is one of the most used herbal remedies for insomnia.

Meditation or Chanting mantras: I do mantra chanting every day to connect with the spiritual side of me. This helps me in stress management too. Simply chanting makes me more focused and feel relaxed. Relaxation techniques like meditation or chanting mantras can cure anything. This heals your mind and gives you better sleep at night.

Gut timings: Put your gut in discipline and stop overloading it with food. This will keep you awake at night as your system is digesting the food. Try not to eat after sunset as it is the time for melatonin secretion. Follow a healthier diet for treating insomnia.

Ashwagandha: Natural remedies for insomnia that I tried in the beginning stages include one most famous herb named Ashwagandha. I was given this for other medical reasons too for one month only. Don’t consume it without an Ayurvedic doctor’s suggestion. You must ask the doctor before consumption.

All holistic approaches for treating insomnia will only be helpful if you follow them religiously. Natural remedies for insomnia can be very helpful for all those who hate medicines like me. Many people start taking drugs or alcohol for sleep which can ruin their health. Trust me simple lifestyle changes can help you a lot. Start from today. Hope this will also help you heal soon.

Home remedies for insomnia can work on people who have positive attitudes in life. Stay away from negativity. Calm your mind with the above remedies for sleepless nights.

May you have a good night’s sleep today.
